Babergh Refugee Interest Group

has formed to get involved with exploring the possibility of providing direct help locally for those who have become refugees, especially from Syria where the situation is desperate.

The last government agreed to take 20,000 over 5 years of which Suffolk’s share would be 200. The support is focused on Ipswich but there is a need to provide some placements in more rural areas. Babergh & Mid Suffolk are asked to be part of this but need the initiative to come from local interest groups. Financial support would come partly from outside but some would need to be gathered locally. It is thought to be in the region of £9 -12000 per family over 2 years, with the need to support 3 families in an area so they are not isolated. This is a big ask – but then the need is great. The Interest Group are approaching various groups and organizations so that the response can be seen to come from the whole community.
